Getting to the top of the corporate ladder entails responsibilities and just to be able to get their is not something as easy as doing your groceries. It takes more than just good looks either. You will always hit dead ends somewhere along the way. Many obstacles will derail you from the track towards your desired position. You need to work on things and you need to be smart. You should never have disagreements with the higher management. Even if your point of view is correct, it is just not wise to contradict them at the moment. You need to develop others talents and be able to work as a team effectively. Lastly, you need to be respected. And you must earn it, not force it to your co workers.

Some professionals have stayed on doing the same stuff, having the same job position and the same compensation for the longest time and are now wondering if a step up in the corporate ladder will ever be feasible or an impossible feat. They might be wondering, why no promotion even if they work their butts out. Punctual, submits reports on time and make great friends in the workplace and yet, no promotion knocking on their door. It is important to know that there are ways to get that job promotion or the salary increase you have waited for a long time to come. You dont need to give your supervisors expensive gifts, though this might be tempting to do. What you should do is evaluate yourself honestly, in terms of work. You may have been in the workforce for a decade but hadn’t done anything relevant so as to catch the higher-ups’ attention. Try to think how you accept new assignments and how you do in crunch times. Do you whine and make bad remarks? Really think hard, maybe the answer to your endless wondering is just right under your nose.

One winning method is to single out an unresolved challenge that exists in your company. Try to pick a situation that will benefit from your combination of experience and skills. Write a memo that outlines the need you’ve discovered. Highlight how you will use your skills to resolve the problem and contribute to the immediate objectives of the team or department involved. Send your memo to the person who will benefit most from your unique approach, for example, your boss or a human resources representative.
Without your proactive approach to your career and potential promotion, the company may decide to promote one of your peers. By being proactive, you create a win-win situation. You may gain a challenging, enjoyable career opportunity and eliminate the need for a competition. Even if a new career or promotion opportunity does not result from your actions, you have successfully created an opportunity to demonstrate your value to the organization.

Who’s your market?

To have the passion for a product or to be familiar with the industry is not enough. As in all businesses, you have to study it, research about it, and assess your competition.
The point here is that you must know who your market will be. You don’t need to be a scientist to research your market and you won’t even need to hire a market researcher whom you’ll end up paying thousands just for that simple task. For the most part, all you have to do is talk to your friends and they’ll talk to their relatives. Chat up with your relatives and have their friends come over as well. You can also simply ask some random person on the street. Engage in small talks in the supermarkets or malls, as all the potential target consumers are all in those kinds of places. Ask them general questions that you can relate to the product you have in mind. It might be too informal to record but the spontaneity is what gives it its validity. Simple, but reliable research is what you have!

Promotions are underestimated by most people; that’s why not everyone gets it. But you can be one of those selected few who manage to prove to the bosses that they are worthy of that boost. Promotions lean heavily on your qualifications. Before you even try to vie for one, make sure that you already have the requisite knowledge and skills that the higher position requires. Experience is a key factor, too. Assess yourself whether you are already good enough to merit that position, you can even check out databases for this one. Don’t fool yourself, and avoid false hopes. But if you know that you are now a perfect and worthy candidate for that promotion, then by all means, go for it.

It’s Not Always the Pay

With promotions, increased salary is usually the most common reason for wanting to attain it. But money should not be your sole drive for wanting to achieve that next step in the corporate ladder. Keep in mind that a promotion is like a package; it does not come by itself. When you get promoted, it means that you will also have heavier responsibilities and more people that you will be in charge of. Also, a higher position would require more skills and experience on your part. A promotion is not just another way to add cash to your bank account, so don’t consider it solely as one.

Ask for More

Do not groan when you are given extra work, in fact, it would be best to ask for it. No, this is not a crazy idea. By asking for more things to do and for added responsibility, you are letting the bosses know that you are now ready to handle more than you have, and that you are now skilled enough to move up the promotional ladder. This shows the higher echelons that you have graduated from being the average employee to somebody who actually cares about the welfare of the company and is even willing to put in extra work for it.
