As much as you would want to do away with formalities and organization, a business plan is still best to follow. Basically, a business plan puts a “face” on your project and it makes everything official. As such, this will compel you to actually work and work at the things that will make your success chances bigger. These things include choosing the right product, knowing the people you’d want to work with, as well as studying the market conditions.

A business plan will help you detect both problems and opportunities in your market, lay down your goals and objectives, and create your financial framework. For example, you’d need to know how much to spend for manufacturing that’s good for a month or two. You’d also need to know where to get resources and materials as well as plan out your target sales for a given period. All this things shall guide you to learn how much working capital you’d need not only to put up your business but as well as to maintain it for the next five years or so.

You want to why risk is very important in marketing this article tells us why.

“What is it about entrepreneurs that enables them to live so far on the edge? Do they thrive on the adrenaline of risk-taking?” This made me think of another question that I frequently encounter when people find out that I love ice climbing: “How can you live with the risk? Do you actually enjoy flirting with death?”

I think that these are all the same question, founded on the same implicit but ill-founded assumption: that risk equates to danger. Now, I am not going to try and convince you that there aren’t people who do love the rush of throwing the dice—with their life or their bank account. But just because someone won a multimillion-dollar windfall by buying lottery tickets with their retirement fund, or survived running a treacherous river without any training, the fact is not altered that what they were doing was gambling, not investing. The end result is as unrepeatable as it can be inadvisable.

Calculated Risks

So if it’s not the thrill of gambling, what does distinguish the serial entrepreneur and the ice climber from the population at large? For a start, they understand the very clear distinction between risk and danger. Second, and—perhaps most importantly—they know that there are ways to approach an otherwise dangerous task in such a way that the risk is reduced to an acceptable level.

Why do entrepreneurs and ice climbers repeatedly prompt questions of flirting with death and disaster? My best guess is that a lack of familiarity prevents nonpractitioners from seeing what lies behind the surface: the serious and conscientious preparation that such people bring to their respective activities. To illustrate this, let me tell you a bit about ice climbing.

Essential Requirements

Anyone who has ever walked on a frozen lake, gone ice skating or tried curling knows that ice is slippery and that it takes practice to move with any kind of confidence. Now imagine that the ice sheet is vertical rather than horizontal. This should give you some sense of the challenge of ice-climbing. But then remember there are four things that the prepared ice-climber brings to the base of any climb: training, tools, fitness, and partner(s)

The need for training is pretty obvious. One has to know what one is doing. Just as you have to learn the rules of the road in order to drive on the freeway, the ice climber has to be educated about technique, the appropriate use of tools and procedures, reading the ice, and the evaluation of objective hazards.

Tools have improved significantly over the past decades. Strapped to one’s feet, in a manner not unlike roller-skates (but much more secure) are crampons. These have one or more long, sharp, surrogate toes that you can kick into the ice, thereby giving purchase to your feet. In each hand one has a short, curved, ice axe that is designed to enable one to smoothly drive the pick into the frozen water, thereby giving you something to hold onto. In the event that someone above knocks off some ice, one wears a helmet to protect the head. For protection in the event of a fall, one has a rope firmly tied to a harness around the waist. While ascending, the climber regularly sets a hollow titanium screw into the ice. This forms part of a system of running anchors.

The Element of Trust

This last point relates to the fact that the whole exercise is based on trust; trust in our training, our assessment of the situation, our tools, fitness, and—especially—our partner. You wouldn’t consent to being driven on the freeway by someone you didn’t trust, or who was impaired in one way or another. Nor would any reasonable person put their life in the hands of such a person in the mountains. Your partner is someone you trust with your life. Perhaps because of that, a partner is also the kind of person who makes the experience doubly enjoyable, being shared.

The lessons for business are simple: the four considerations employed by the ice climber are exactly the same as those used by the serial entrepreneur or the effective business person. Of course it could be argued that the rich scope of business constitutes a much more amorphous challenge than a frozen waterfall. But that makes it all the more rash to proceed without carefully considering the following:

Training: What, in fact are the skills that would best equip me to engage this problem? Are they evident in my team? If so, how do I hone them? If not, how do I bring them onboard?

Tools: What tools are relevant to the problem? What are the potentially useful processes, technologies or other instruments that might give me purchase and protection throughout the exercise?

Fitness: How does one prepare? How rusty are my skills? What would constitute a warm-up exercise, or a “preliminary heat” that would let me find out if I were ready for the game?

Partners: No matter how good you and your team are, in most significant cases you will need partners. Do you have the right ones? My approach in this is simple: Get the best. If you can’t, you might want to question the wisdom of proceeding. After all, if they aren’t working for you, they may be working for someone on the other side of the table.

Risk is not only not to be avoided, it is to be embraced—for survival.

Decided to go to law school, start working at a law firm, and realize you’re actually more interested in finance and investment banking?

You’re not alone.

It’s fairly common for lawyers to switch into finance and investment banking specifically. There are several paths from law to investment banking.

You can get a banking job immediately after finishing law school; you can work as a law firm Associate for several years and then transition over; and you can go to business school after practicing for several years and interview for banking jobs as you complete your MBA.

It sounds appealing to go immediately from law school into investment banking. However, it is difficult to pull off and most banks do not recruit someone immediately out of law school. They would have difficulty placing the candidate and deciding whether to make him an Analyst or Associate.

This method becomes easier if you had finance experience prior to law school, in which case you just need to tell a good story about why you went to law school.

If you haven’t had this experience, it’s better to work for a few years at a law firm and transition over.

Going to business school after law school is only recommended if you’ve practiced in a completely unrelated legal field like Intellectual Property or Environmental Law.

How To Work In Law And Then Switch To Banking

You need to Corporate Law. Don’t even think about Intellectual Property, Litigation, or anything else. Do Corporate Law.

Recruiting is ultimately a numbers game, and you increase your odds greatly if you have Corporate, Securities, or M&A legal experience.

Once you have a few years experience working on transactions, you can consider switching into finance.

Contact all your friends in the industry and ask for referrals to recruiters; contact former clients and ask about setting up informational meetings or discussing opportunities at their firms.

Target industries and clients you have experience with. If you worked with a lot of technology companies, go for technology investment banking firms; if you did Mergers And Acquisitions, go for the M&A departments at banks.

Also, try for boutiques and middle-market firms rather than bulge brackets unless you work at one of the top few law firms – it will be much easier to get into smaller places.

How To Sell Your Story In Interviews

With a Corporate Law background, there are 2 main points you’ll need to prove: 1) that you have quantitative and finance skills and 2) that you really want to make a big career change even if you’re on Partner track at your law firm.

You really need to focus on financial skills in your interview preparations. Know the 3 financial statements cold. Be able to explain models and valuation methods because they will ask you tons of questions here, especially if you were an English or History major and have no finance experience.

This is one of the few cases where getting a CFA might actually help you get into investment banking – it would give you the finance knowledge and show your interest in the field.

Making the case for a career change can actually be easier. You want to emphasize you were always interested in corporate finance and dealmaking, and went into Corporate Law for those reasons. However, you got frustrated with your inability to BE the dealmaker and how you had to just sit on the sidelines, and so now you want to switch into banking and be a player.

Before choosing a particular country, you need to make up your mind about whether you really want to give up your current job and take one in a country you are unsure about. This could be an intimidating task, since taking a job in a foreign country does not only mean relocating, but also making new friends and developing new business relationships.

Selecting A Job Recruitment Agency And The Country

In addition to choosing the country, you should cross check the authenticity of the position. There are certain job sites that dupe people into applying for overseas jobs. There are Internet sites springing up that ask for a certain amount of money, under the guise of recruitment and relocation charges. You can verify if a company is genuine by checking with the U.S Federal Commission. Over the past few years, a number of fraudulent companies have been exposed. The ‘work from home’ classifieds featured on websites and local newspapers are among these.

There are certain criteria you need to consider before short-listing a country that you want to work in:

Language Fluency: Most overseas companies emphasize language efficiency in the local language. In spite of being an alien to the country, if you can converse fluently in the local language, it definitely increases your chances of getting the job. This simplifies business transactions considerably.

Local Recruiters: Working with a local recruiter who knows the area well could help to ensure that you have the required skills.

Choose A Job-Centric Country: Some countries have demand for a certain jobs. For instance England, Russia, Germany and Spain have a demand for candidates with international banking expertise and technological backgrounds.

When you select a country, you should consider:

o The Expiration Date Of Your Passport: You wouldn’t want to be stuck in your own country after signing on the dotted line due to an invalid passport.

o Verify Documents: You need to maintain and secure all the required papers and you need to find out how long it will take to acquire them if you don’t have them already

o Clarify All Doubts: Inquire about any work permits needed in the country you are considering. Some countries have different requirements for foreigners.

o Immunizations: You might need to be immunized, before going to another country.

o Language: Identify the local languages of the country.

o Sponsorship: When you are working with the company, verify whether the company would sponsor your visits back home.

o Culture And Customs Of The Country: These affect the living conditions of the employee. Some countries have legal clauses about allowing the admission of people of certain religions. Besides, some countries sadly still allow racial discrimination, meaning they may not hire you even if you fit the bill.

Whether it’s your first or your hundredth and whether your rate of getting the job offer after the interview is 10% or 90%, preparing for an interview is always among the most nerve-wracking of tasks.

Your stress level, however, will drop when you know you are ready for the interview. The following tips will give you that confidence you need.

1. Be prepared for a few basic questions, especially the negative ones like what are your weaknesses and why do you want to leave your current job. Once you’ve gone to a number of interviews, you will notice that certain questions, or at least certain types of questions, get asked on a regular basis. Be prepared to sound CONFIDENT, not perfect. The impression you want to leave is that you are competent and smart, recognize your weak points, and most importantly are actively working to address problem areas.

When you’re preparing for an interview, the most important question to think about is the one about your greatest weakness. Think about this one for a while. Make sure your answer to this question will be similar to the answers your references will give. It is okay to ask them what you think your biggest weakness is, in fact!

2. Know your interviewer. This doesn’t mean call him up and ask him out to coffee. It means you should call the place you’re hoping to be working at soon and ask the receptionist who she thinks your boss will be in that position. If she doesn’t know, you can ask for human resources and see if they will tell you. You do not have to give your name in this call, just say that you’re interested in the position and would like to send a copy of your letter and resume to this person in addition to the blank box address or human resources address given in the posting. Then follow up by sending that resume to that interviewer.

Find out, if possible, what your interviewer’s job is, and do a quick Google on their name to see if there has been any recent news. It’s nice to be able to congratulate them if they’ve won an award for instance. Don’t get creepy; going into Facebook to find out the name of their wife, daughter, and goldfish is too much. Keep it professional.

3. If you’re not a hundred percent certain what the job entails, find out. All you have to do is pick up the phone and call, seriously. You don’t even have to talk to your interviewer or prospective boss, though that’s not necessarily bad. Giving them a call before you go in does a few things. First, you can be informed about the job. Second, it gives you a chance to ask about other things that seem trivial until they come up: Where do you park? Is there a guard to check in with? Anything special you should expect? I once showed up for a 7:30 interview at a building that wasn’t unlocked until 8 am. The interviewer simply didn’t think about this, and sat fuming when I wasn’t there until she realized that I was locked out.

When you understand what the position will be, think about the company and the position. Can you project what they might want to be doing with this position? For instance, I once applied for a job teaching office skills to people moving off welfare into the workplace. Some research on this job told me that not only were they planning to continue this project, they were going to expand into the private sector and teach computer classes to local businesses. By knowing this, I was able to address their plans directly in the interview – before they asked. This let them know I was on the same page, career-wise, they were on, and I landed the job.

4. Wear comfortable shoes. No, this does not mean tennis shoes. Instead, you need to recognize that your attitude is going to be largely determined by how comfortable you feel at the interview. Too-tight pantyhose, a bra strap that slides down, shoes that pinch, pants that ride up – all these things are going to make your interview more difficult. Look good, but opt for interview clothes that don’t make you aware that you’re wearing clothes. This may mean that your second-best suit, or your mom’s great pumps, are what you need to wear.

As you prepare for your interview remember that your personal appearance is more than just clothes-deep, and looking comfortable gives you a completely different dimension. Make sure you feel good before walking in, so you can focus on the interviewer instead of wondering if you have a blister.

5. Use positive body language at every step. Your interview starts when you drive into the parking lot. You need to be completely aware of your surroundings and the attitude you are giving off at every step from that moment forward. (Yes, this also means wash the car.) Walk inside with confidence, and be kind to the receptionist. You would be surprised how many interviewers ask her opinion of the interviewee!

The firm handshake is not optional, regardless of your sex. Instead, it is a skill to be mastered. When you’re working on it, put yourself into the role of the interviewer; would you hire someone with limp hands? Over and over, interviewers state that this one aspect of a person sets the tone for the entire interview. As part of preparing for an interview, practice it with your friends, along with the friendly, confident smile, until you know you have it right.

STEP UP!

Superiors and bosses love to have people in their organization who has the ability and the initiative to step up.

Stepping up is a great way to prove your superiors that you are reliable, professional, cooperative, and simply worthy of promotion.

By doing so, you may also discover how to maximize the use of your skills for the benefit of the company. Show everyone that you are versatile and that you are willing to do any task that would profit the whole corporation.

Also the more you do things, the more you will realize and enrich your capabilities.
Tell people about your value in actions not in words.

Dedication to work is very important in any institution or company. Employers and managers will always notice workers who are very dedicated in what they are doing. This is no different when you are working in a bank. In fact, you are more likely to be noticed because of your dedication because of how banks usually work.

In a typical bank, business hours are from 9 am to 3 am. This allows the bank staff 2 hours to sort out the paperwork and balance the sheets for the day. With just the employees remaining inside the bank, it is easy for the manager to see who’s really dedicated to what they’re doing.

Do you daydream about loan officer marketing that gets you on every realtor’s speed dial? It is easy once you realize your strategy does not need to follow the tried-and-true path of ego-deflating cold calls and low referrals. Nor does it require big bucks – just a different, creative plan for keeping your name on a realtor’s radar 24/7.

1) Get an agent-centered website. You can communicate more online than you can on paper, which means you can save time and money. Your website will help you delineate between agents who are serious about working with you and those who are just curious because it will be the first place you direct them.

The content on your site acts as a resource to inform and educate about your services and how you conduct business. This kind of loan officer marketing gives you instant visibility, develops familiarity, and shortens the relationship cycle. Agents will begin to feel like they know before they even talk to you for the first time.

2) Show how you are different. When was the last time you focused on standing out from other loan officers? Every mortgage company claims to be different, which makes them continue to appear the same. Do not leave agents to figure out what the difference is, articulate it and show them! Little things mean a lot and pointing out specific ways you can help them will put your brand of loan officer marketing ahead of the rest.

There is no need to make a sales pitch upfront – take some time to prove what you can do by working with them on a problem. Officemates will wonder what their colleague has done to get such good service. You will begin to gain trust by helping them experience your service firsthand.

3) Build relationships instead of one-time clients. A common mistake among loan officer marketing is that they try to convert strangers into clients right off the bat. Relationships require patience. An agent may not refer show interest at first, but adding value to their business over time will keep you on their radar.

Starting out can be as simple as asking what you can do to help them. Be sure that whatever you offer is something that educates and informs, because your expertise will begin to act as bait. Once you have agents interested in working with you, that is when you begin building their loyalty and enriching your referral list.
